ADRIAN ERÖD in Penderecki's St Luke Passion at the Baltic Opera Festival

Under the artistic direction of KS Tomasz Konieczny, the Baltic Opera Festival has emerged as one of the largest open-air opera events on the international stage for a few years now and this year's edition is dedicated to contemporary themes such as the increasing isolation of the individual in the face of advancing technologisation, increasing armed conflicts and the progressive depletion - in the truest sense of the word - of our planet's resources.

The theme of the lonely wanderer and the excluded individual corresponds to the loss of home and being displaced, for which the first scenic realisation of Krzysztof Penderecki's St Luke Passion - as a story about the lonely prophet Christ - is intended to be representative and one of the central points of the programme. Penderecki's St Luke Passion was commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk in 1966 and is regarded as one of the key works of New Music.

In this context, Adrian Eröd, who is also very familiar with 20th century music, performs the baritone part of this large-scale oratorio, which combines modern compositional techniques such as sonorism with the traditional form of the Baroque Passion and will be performed on 12 July under the direction of Basem Akiki at the Waldoper in Sopot.
