Austrian baritone Christoph Filler studied singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna under Peter Edelmann, before completing the master's programme in Lied and Oratorio with Florian Boesch.
After joining the Zurich International Opera Studio, and subsequently becoming a permanent ensemble member of the Munich Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, he sang roles including Masetto in Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Count Eberbach in Lortzing's Der Wildschütz, Schaunard in La Bohème, Sir Edgar's secretary in Henze's Der junge Lord, as well as Danilo in Die lustige Witwe and Josef in Wiener Blut.
Guest appearances have taken him to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Theater St. Galle as Toni Schlumberger in Emmerich Kálmán's Die Zirkusprinzessin and Dr. Falke, to the Daegu Opera House in South Korea as Belcore in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore and to the Theater Chemnitz with the title role in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. At the Innsbruck Landestheater Christoph Filler appeared in a new production of Peter Eötvös' The Golden Dragon, as Haly in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri and in the title role of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. He made his role debut as Gabriel von Eisenstein at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and celebrated his house debut at the MusikTheater an der Wien in a new production of Vicente Martín y Solér's L'arbore di Diana conducted by Rubén Dubrovsky.
On the concert stage, Christoph Filler has performed in Haydn's Die Jahreszeiten, Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem and Orff's Carmina Burana, making a successful debut with the latter at the Vienna Konzerthaus. As soloist in Bach's St Matthew Passion, Christoph Filler made his debut at the Vienna Musikverein with the Orchestra Wiener Akademie under Martin Haselböck, alongside whom he was also heard in Mozart's Requiem and — accompanied by the Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra — in Bach's St Matthew Passion in Los Angeles. He appeared as Christ in the same work at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid. With the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg under the baton of Theodor Guschlbauer, Christoph Filler made a guest appearance in Haydn's The Creation, which he subsequently performed on tour with the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées under Philippe Herreweghe. Christoph Filler worked with the Concentus Musicus under Stefan Gottfried in a concert performance of Purcell's The Fairy Queen and for Bach's St. John Passion at the Vienna Musikverein, while Schubert's Mass in E-flat major was the focus of his debut with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
Christoph Filler is an equally versatile Lied singer, with special attention to the works of Franz Schubert and Gustav Mahler, whose song cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen he presented at the Salzkammergut Festwochen Gmunden with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Academy. With Mahler's Kindertotenlieder and Schubert's Winterreise, he has additionally appeared at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, and sang Schubert's Winterreise at Vienna's MuTh as part of "Michael Schade's Musiksalon".
In addition to appearances at the Vienna Musikverein in Haydn's Theresienmesse with Concentus Musicus Wien under Stefan Gottfried and, among others, Bach's Magnificat with the Orchestra Wiener Akademie under Martin Haselböck, Christoph Filler can also be heard for the first time in the current season as soloist in Bach's St John Passion with the Catalan ensemble Le Concert des Nations and La Capella Nacional de Catalunya under the direction of their founder Jordi Savall. He also returns to MusikTheater an der Wien as part of a pastiche based on Shakespeare's drama Richard III and music by Henry Purcell. On the stage of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris for the first time he sings Eisenstein in Strauss' Die Fledermaus under the direction of Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre.
