Following Schumann's ‘Scenes from Goethe's Faust’ with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome under its new chief conductor Daniel Harding, Christiane Karg can now be heard as the soloist in Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony with the Budapest Festival Orchestra under Iván Fischer. In addition to the concert hall in Budapest's Müpa, this orchestra tour will also include the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Concertgebouw in Bruges and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
The concert with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Lahav Shani in the local Laurenskerk, which was severely damaged in the air raid, is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the German bombing of Rotterdam on 14 May 1940. Fauré's Requiem and a world premiere by Ukrainian composer Maxim Shalygin, who now lives in the Netherlands, entitled ‘Canto Inferno’ will take centre stage at this memorial concert, which will also be repeated in Rotterdam's de Doelen Concert Hall on 16 and 18 May.
