Internationally acclaimed tenor Michael Schade takes on the role of the Captain in Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck – and in doing so he will be making history, as the first performance will mark the work's debut in China. Schade, known for his stylistic versatility and expressive stage presence, impressively brings out the psychological depth and bitter irony of this complex character. Wozzeck, one of the central works of musical modernism, is considered a challenge for singers, orchestras and audiences alike – with its expressive musical language and relentless social criticism.
Following the performance in Shanghai, the very first staged production of the piece on Chinese soil will take place in Beijing on 18 October – a cultural event of special significance. This marks a further opening of the Chinese opera scene to the 20th century and its masterpieces. Michael Schade, who regularly performs on the world's major stages, brings his experience, vocal precision and human depth to this historic premiere in a role that oscillates between grotesque humour and tragic desolation.
