After enjoying great success in the title role of Mozart's Idomeneo at the Sydney Opera last year, Michael Schade is back on the opera stage this month, returning to the Canadian Opera Company where he made his acclaimed role debut as Herod in Strauss' Salome in 2023. He can also be seen in this role in Atom Egoyna's film drama Seven Veils, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023.
Now he can be seen for the first time in Alban Berg's Wozzeck - a true masterpiece of modern music. The role of the Captain is a grotesque, exaggerated caricature of authority - an anxious, self-righteous windbag who rises above Wozzeck to compensate for his own insecurity - psychologically complex and full of contradictions. With his experience in lieder and Strauss opera roles, Michael Schade's perfect diction, extremely controlled speaking and singing voice and his courage to exaggerate his acting are virtually predestined for this role.
